Sealants
The chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) are ideal places for plaque and acids to attack the tooth surface. Sealants help to reduce the likelihood that this will occur by acting as a barrier and protecting the delicate enamel from the corrosive effects of what we eat and drink.
The sealant itself is made from a plastic resin bond material that bonds into the grooves and depressions of the teeth. The pits and fissures that naturally occur on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth are then protected by the sealant.
While brushing and flossing are still the most effective day-to-day measures we have to prevent excessive buildup, it is not possible to remove all food particles from the teeth. Once the plastic resin has bonded to the teeth, you have effectively “sealed out” both plaque and food particles.
Unfortunately, almost everyone is susceptible to the development of pit and fissure decay and oftentimes, it begins early in life. Because of this, children and teenagers benefit tremendously from the use of sealants but adults can benefit as well.
Even though sealants can have a big impact on the lifespan of tooth surfaces, the best offense is a good defense and that comes with brushing and flossing daily as well as regular dental visits for proper cleanings. If you keep this advice in mind, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of more expensive procedures later on life such as dental implants or root canals.
